GET WIRED!
My son, Derek, has finally fulfilled his dream - he has produced his
first CD: "WIRE" - "notably distinctive and relentlessly original
compositions" for solo piano. Last week I described my experiences living
in Spain as a result of my mother living out her dream; I see both my mother
and Derek as having the courage to take enormous risks to realize their
goals. As I lead workshops and teleclasses on TAKING RISKS THAT LEAD
TO PERSONAL GROWTH, I am struck by the people who have the courage
to step way out of their comfort zone to realize their potential - how
many of us do that? Derek has become another one of my heros and role models
and I am so proud to have the opportunity to tell you a little about him.
At Derek's website (http://www.derekgeary.com)
his PATH TO SUCCESS is described better than I can say it: "As much
as any jazz musician recording today, Geary has taken a circuitous path
en route to releasing his first solo album...he was hardly the stereotypical
musical prodigy. If he wasn't at home practicing the piano, chances are
he was strapping on ice skates, stick in hand, chasing a puck. Hockey came
as naturally to him as playing Hanon etudes, and the talent he displayed
for that sport was as rare as the one he had for the piano. He proved himself
able enough on ice to be drafted by the Boston Bruins in the sixth round
of the 1988 NHL draft, the day he graduated from Gloucester High School.
However, despite the effort it takes to make one's self into a world class
hockey player, Geary never strayed far from piano. In 1994, after graduating
from Dartmouth College, he moved to Boston to train with the Bruins full
time as a professional hockey player. Yet his bearing towards music weighed
heavily on him to the point that, in dramatic fashion, at the beginning
of the Bruins' training camp, Derek quit the team and the sport forever.
Since then he has pursued his musical career full-time, studying under
the tutelage of notable Boston musicians John Heiss and Ran Blake of the
New England conservatory, and working as the personal assistant of legendary
composer Gunther Schuller. In 1996, Derek moved to Austin, Texas, where
he spent what amounted to three intense years in the shed behind his house
with his piano, devoting all his creative energy to his own music. The
result is the dynamic, highly personal music you find on: WIRE, culminating
in 23 years of hard work and devotion. If, as concert pianist and writer
Russell Sherman once said: "To know the piano is to know the universe,"
Derek Geary is an avid and fearless explorer" - and I'm proud to have a
small part in his exploration and achievement. I hope you too will become
part of his universe... as well as be inspired by him to live out your
own dream!

FEEDBACK from last week's issue:
Loved your story, Laurie (rhyming incidental, not intentional--[that
one,
too!]). I'm sure I'll refer to it often to help people here understand
what
being in a different culture feels like--here on the border, it's often
an
issue, both ways.

Sounds like you were thrown into the deep end of the pool,
and came out a good swimmer! Fascinating story...
