Hi Laurie: My Foundations class is right on with these topics of late!
Thanks for the fortuitous writing.

Hi Laurie,
Thanks for sending me your newsletter!  It's very cool to see that our
ideas on attraction are very much aligned - probably because they come from
the same source!  I also like the format of your newsletter - well
organized with lots of useful information.
Take care!  -- Eddie Marmol, Coach

AWARENESS - ACTION - ACCOUNTABILITY

In order to be most effective in putting the <8-A system> to work, you must apply three <A> steps to each one of the <8 As> = First: BECOME AWARE; Second:TAKE ACTION; Third: BE ACCOUNTABLE.

STEP ONE: AWARENESS:
Before you can make any changes in your life in order to build your self esteem, you must first become aware: aware of what you want to change and of what you want to keep.  Are you aware of your needs? your values? your goals? your strengths/weaknesses? blocks? stuck places?  How do you become aware?
Becoming aware is a process...a lifelong process.  We become aware by being open to LEARNING....education, training, reading, listening to tapes; we become aware by being open to FEEDBACK; we become aware by taking assessments or inventories or evaluations; we become aware by dialoguing with others;  we become aware by tuning into our intuition... How else do you become aware?

A well-known model of the learning process goes like this: first we are UNCONSCIOUSLY UNCONSCIOUS (we don't know what we don't know); then, through the process of awareness, we become  CONSCIOUSLY UNCONSCIOUS (now we know what we don't know); then we move on to become CONSCIOUSLY CONSCIOUS (we know what we know); finally, UNCONSCIOUSLY CONSCIOUS (we have integrated the knowledge/skill so well, it becomes part of us).   This learning process continues throughout our lifetime with each new awareness.

So,  how does one go from steps <1> to  <2>? From UNCONSCIOUS TO CONSCIOUS?  One way is through self disclosure; telling others how you feel or what you think.  Sidney Jourard, psychologist, wrote <no man can come to know himself except as an outcome of disclosing himself to another person>

Two psychologists, Harry Ingham and Joseph Luft, developed a graphic model of awareness called the Johari Window <email me for a visual copy>.  The Johari Window helps people see the value of self disclosure as a way to know oneself better as well as to improve interpersonal relationships.

Other ways to become more aware:
Take courses/workshops/teleclasses/trainings... listen to tapes....read...take an assessment, ask for feedback...trust your intuition.....or hire a coach to help you become more aware!
What other ideas do you have for developing awareness?

STEP TWO: ACTION
Taking action is crucial to manifesting your awareness; action clarifies and solidifies your awareness. Action is external; awareness is internal.  Once you take action you make a commitment to your learning and growth; it is through action that we can best know ourselves.  Action creates muscle memory... psychoneuro-conditioning.... In order to take action we often must be willing to RISK..to get out of our comfort zone; and thus we must be willing to make mistakes and experience failure.  Without taking action we won't grow or develop.

Sometimes it works best to take action first...by taking action one becomes aware.  As mentioned in a previous newsletter <Issue #25: LEARNING BY DOING>, this is the model of experiential education.

Either way you choose to go, ACTION & AWARENESS are essential elements to building self esteem.  Don't stop at awareness; take action today!

Mark Twain says it well: "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

You CAN learn to take more risks...to get into action..by developing your risk muscle <see previous issues for more information on how to take risks responsibly>  First you must WANT to risk by becoming more aware: take action..then find a way to BE ACCOUNTABLE  for your actions>

STEP THREE: BE ACCOUNTABLE
The dictionary defines accountable as <subject to having to report...being responsible;answerable> People hire coaches to hold them accountable to their actions so that they can move forward faster with their goals; people enter programs like Weight Watchers so that they will be held accountable.  You can hold yourself accountable...how will you do that?  Keep a journal? keep a checklist? set deadlines? make a commitment to a friend or a colleague?  Being held accountable for your actions will accelerate your growth in building your self esteem!
