TAKING RISKS BUILDS SELF ESTEEM!

Do you consider yourself a risk-taker? Do you wish you would take more risks? Is risk-taking a positive action? Does risk-taking build self esteem?

    The dictionary definition of risk-taking <to endanger, jeopardize> implies that risking is a negative action. Yet many of us see risk-taking as positive..as <the path to personal growth.> While it is possible that risking will bring about negative consequences, it is just as likely that positive consequences will occur.
 Are we Americans more inclined to expect positive consequences from risk? Did we inherit the desire to risk from our ancestors? <who came to this brave new world with the belief that their actions would bring positive change>

     I am a product of my great-grandmother and grandfather who came from Norway in the early 1900's to build a better life; they took great risks to be here.

     Perhaps this is why I believe responsible risk-taking builds self esteem. How?

*The more risks we take the more we develop our <risk muscle>.  The stronger our muscle, the more risks we are willing to take. We create a positive cycle for change.

*Risking leads to successful <and unsuccessful> achievements. We can feel proud of our achievements; we often receive positive feedback for our achievements; we can feel the adrenalin rush and exhilaration of our great achievements.

*Risking can bring about Breakthroughs in thinking which can lead to great results; Risking can lead us to having <Peak Experiences> as describe by psychologist Abraham Maslow.

*As a Risk-taker we can become a role model/mentor/coach for others
who are considering taking risks yet lack the courage to begin; our example can inspire people to follow in our footsteps for their own personal growth.

*<Unsuccessful> risking can teach us the value of <failure>..how we can learn from our <failures>...We learn about ourselves and about others, we learn what we are capable of, we learn what different steps we need to take for the next risk, etc.

*David Viscott, author of RISKING, says it well:
If you cannot risk, you cannot grow;
If you cannot grow, you cannot become your best;
If you cannot become your best, you cannot be happy;
If you cannot be happy, what else matters?

So....TAKE RISKS TO BUILD YOUR SELF ESTEEM!
