Regarding my issue (#54) on <on Turning 80> I received the following wonderful poems from Rhoda Riddell (who just turned 80!):

<Life Begins at 80......
"I have good news for you. The first 80 years are the hardest. The second
80 are a succession of birthday parties.
"Once you reach 80, everyone wants to carry your baggage and help you up
the steps. If you forget....you need only explain that you are 80.
"Being 80 is a lot better than being 70. At 70 people are mad at you for
everything. ...they expect you to retire...and complain...and stop mumbling...
"If you survive until you are 80, everybody is surprised that you are
still alive. They treat you with respect. Actually they seem surprised that
you can walk and talk sensibly.
...It's the best time of life. People forgive you....life begins at 80>

Out of my crude childhood, I stared at

I could not see the girl my father saw.
Now that I'm older than my father then was
I go with lifelong friends to the same parties
Which we have gone to always.
We seem the same age always
Although the parties sometimes change to funerals
That sometimes used to change to christenings.
Faces we've once loved
Fit into their seven ages as Russian dolls
Into one another. My memory
Penetrates through successive layers
Back to the face which first I saw. So when the last

<The Envelope...
It is true, Martin Heidegger, as you have written,
I fear to cease, even knowing that at the hour
of my death my daughters will absorb me, even
knowing they will carry me about forever
inside them, an arrested fetus, even as I carry
the ghost of my mother under my navel, a nervy
little androgynous person, a miracle
folded in a lotus position.
Like those old pear-shaped Russian dolls that open
at the middle to reveal another and another, down
to the pea-sized, irreducible minim,
may we carry our mothers forth in our bellies.
May we, borne onward by our daughters, ride
in the Envelope of Almost-Infinity,
that chain letter good for the next twenty-five
thousand days of their lives>

TOPIC:
 I recently attended the 5th annual conference of the International Coach Federation in Vancouver, B.C.  I found all the workshops and speakers to be incredibly inspiring as well as very informative...and being around so many coaches from all over the world was wonderful and affirming.  I left feeling very proud to be a coach and to be part of a community of people who live their values and beliefs while helping others find and live theirs.
Two of our keynote speakers are well-known poets (David Whyte and Oriah Mountain Dreamer). I was reminded of the beauty and strength of poetry and left with the desire to add more poetry to my life.  Thus, in this issue, I want to reprint the well-known poem (from her book, INVITATION)  by keynote speaker, Oriah Mountain Dreamer.  She moved us all with open and honest sharing of her life and work.
For me this poem gets at the essence of my values and beliefs and what I want in my relationships...authenticity, honesty, beauty, trust, courage, joy....and more!

<It doesn't interest me what you do for a living.  I want to know what you ache for and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart's longing?
It doesn't interest me how old you are.  I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dream, for the adventure of being alive?
It doesn't interest me what planets are squaring your moon.  I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, have been opened by life's       betrayals or have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain?
I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without       cautioning us to be careful, to be realistic or to remember the limitations of being human?
It doesn't interest me if the story you are telling me is true.   I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself, if you can bear accusation of
        betrayal and not betray your own soul?
I want to know if you can be faithful and therefore be trustworthy?
I want to know if you can see beauty even when it is not pretty everyday, and if you can source your life from its presence?
I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the sliver of the full moon...YES!
It doesn't interest me to know where you live or how much money you have, I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised        to the bone and do what needs to be done for the children?
It doesn't interest me who you are or how you came to be here.  I want to know if you can stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back?
It doesn't interest me what or where or with whom you have studied.  I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away?
I want to know if you can be alone with yourself and if you truly like the company you keep in empty moments?>
