Topic: IF YOU REALLY CARE ABOUT SOMETHING, KEEP YOUR HANDS ON IT!

Last week was the annual Hands on a Hardbody contest held in Longview, Texas.  For eight years folks have been vying for a new pickup truck by keeping one hand on the prize hardbody truck.  Last one standing wins.  A 1998 documentary of the same name captured the often 4-day human drama of becoming delirious and swollen for a truck.  I found the film to be quite moving and inspiring.. and the parting comment by the winner of that year's contest seems particularly poignant.  Asked if he had learned anything from his gruelling experience, he said: "Well, if you really care about something, keep your hands on it!"
It has occurred to me that this statement is true for just about anything in our lives: our relationships, our work, our hobbies, our beliefs and values...To me "keeping one's hands on" means "holding on to what we've got"...appreciating what we have....valuing our relationships and being committed to them...remaining determined to keep our connections...and, asking ourselves what we can  do to "keep our hands on."  Holding fast to a belief or a value, and acting on that belief, is also "keeping our hands on."   Being persistent in following our dream...holding our focus..being determined to succeed..is also "keeping our hands on."
What do you do to "keep your hands on?"  Do you take the time to keep contact with your connections?  Do you stand by your beliefs?  Are you committed to your dreams?  I think it's important to take stock of your life to determine what you want "to keep your hands on." Your relationships with your loved ones, your friends, your colleagues, your community?  It's easy to take these relationships for granted...to get caught up in our day-to-day routine and not stop to cherish what we have and be grateful for the people in our lives who nourish us.  Relationships need to be cherished..and touched.. Bruce Springsteen sang about the importance of Human Touch,* Shania Twain* sang: "you've got the brains, but have you got the touch?" Dr. Ed Hallowell* wrote about  our connections as the vital ties that open your heart, lengthen your life, and deepen your soul.  Numerous studies have proven the importance of touch to us humans...we actually need it for survival!  Remember, according to Virginia Satir, we need 4 hugs a day...8 for maintenance..and 12 for growth!   How many hugs do you give/get each day?
In the video the contestants gently stroke the truck, all wearing gloves, yet never taking their hands off.  Like our relationships, we need to be connected with a gentle touch...treat people with gloves on...to allow for individuality and separateness while keeping our hands on.
There is a windsurf race each year called the HI-HO: Hook-In/Hang-On..I think of relationships that way also: hook-in and hang-on to the relationships that you care about.  Don't let go!
The same with your dream or your values: sometimes it takes great courage to hang on to what you believe in. Many successful people were able to be persistent, hold their focus, and stay committed despite pressure to conform or follow the norm.   What are the qualities that help you keep hanging on?  How can you develop them in yourself? What gives you the courage?

What are the ways you can "keep your hands on" your relationships?

*Tell them how you feel about them....frequently!
*Touch them! Give hugs, pats on the back, back rubs, smiles...
 *Send cards...notes...emails..letters..make phone calls..
*Spend quality time together- schedule it so that it happens regularly.
 *Hire a relationship coach.
 *????

How do you <keep your hands on> your dream?

 *Stay focused
 *Clarify what you want
*Set goals and take action to complete them
*Surround yourself with supportive, encouraging people (and avoid discouraging, negative people)
*Hire a coach to support you.
 *????

How do you <keep your hands on> your values/beliefs?

*First, clarify your values. (a coach can help here too)
*Find people/groups that have the same values who act on their beliefs.
*Read about successful people and learn from them.
*Support the groups that act on your values either by donating time or money or both.
 *Speak up about your beliefs!
*Set boundaries and standards around your belief system
 *???.

And, most of all, remember, the advice of the Hands on a Hardbody contest winner <if you really care about something, keep your hands on it!>  because that is your only chance of succeeding.
