Topic:          BUILD YOUR ADVERSITY QUOTIENT (AQ)

Last week's issue dealt with the importance of developing one's EQ, or Emotional Intelligence, as a better indicator for life success the traditional indicator: IQ..  Success can be defined as the degree to which one moves forward and upward, progressing to achieve fulfillment and happiness in one's lifetime.  But why do some people succeed and others fail?  Daniel Goleman, in his book on <Emotional Intelligence> shows that IQ, or Intelligence Quotient, hasn't proved to be the best measure of success.  He convinces us that EQ is more important than IQ in predicting personal or professional success in life, yet not everyone takes full advantage of their emotional intelligence.  Remember, EQ reflects your ability to empathize with others, postpone gratification, control your impulses, be self-aware, persist, and interact effectively with others.
Now Paul Stoltz, author of <Adversity Quotient> states that neither IQ nor EQ appear to determine one's success...both play a role..but it is how one deals with adversity (AQ) that is the best predictor of success in life.

What is AQ-Adversity Quotient? According to Stoltz:

*AQ tells you how well you withstand adversity and your ability to surmount it.
*AQ predicts who will overcome adversity and who will be crushed by it.
*AQ predicts who will exceed expectations of their performance and  potential   and who will fall short.
*AQ predicts who will give up and who prevails.

It seems that adversity builds character...a hardiness or an inner strength that we can draw upon to become our best.  Dealing with adversity is like developing  a risk muscle that becomes stronger the more it is used.  John Gray states: "All adversity is really an opportunity for our souls to grow".  Adversity is an opportunity...or an "Advertunity".  One's response to adversity influences all facets of effectiveness, performance, and success.  Researchers in the new science of psychoneuroimmunology have found a direct link between how you respond to adversity and your mental and physical health.
People with high AQ welcome change...they take risks....and  learn from their mistakes..they take responsibility for their own behaviors and have high accountability..they are action-oriented..upbeat..take control of their life..they have the habit of making the best of a bad situation.
Stoltz identified three types of people: Quitters, Campers, and Climbers...Climbers have high AQ..they are dedicated to a lifelong ascent; they face of adversity in their continual pursuit of happiness.  Quitters choose to opt out, back out, drop out...adversity stops them in their tracks and they give up..not willing to face the pain and discomfort.   Campers go only so far, then opt for comfort....eventually feeling bored and dissatisfied, yet not willing to make the effort to continue to climb for success because it means continuing to deal with the discomforts and unknowns of adversity.

What personality type are you: a Quitter? a Camper? or a Climber?

What is your AQ?  You can determine it by taking an assessment of your
AQ - the Adversity Response Profile - in Stoltz's book.

How can you develop your AQ?

TOP TEN WAYS TO DEVELOP YOUR AQ - ADVERSITY QUOTIENT:

1.  Consistently articulate an uplifting, inspirational, and optimistic VISION of your life.  What does success mean to you?  How will you get there?  Who will support you in achieving your success? building your AQ? Be specific and detailed...Create a picture of your ideal life....draw it, write it down, verbalize it to others..make it as real as you can - Create a self-fulfilling prophecy of success.

2.BE CREATIVE - Think "outside the box"  - always ask: "How does this adversity create opportunity for me?"

3. TAKE RISKS! (see past issues of my newsletter for many articles on Risk-taking for personal growth).

4. Surround yourself with other CLIMBERS - Find role models/mentors and people to support you in your climb.   Point out and celebrate high AQ success stories.

5.  HIRE A COACH to support you in developing and strengthening your AQ.

6. Eliminate OBSTACLES to your success such as negative self talk, negative people, lack of opportunity to develop AQ.

7. REWARD yourself for taking chances and  risks...for moving forward and climbing.  Consistently acknowledge your success..daily, weekly, monthly.

8. See failure as success; REFRAME past struggles into success stories.

9. Be a LIFELONG LEARNER...ever-committed to continuous improvement...be a climber!

10. Instill lots of HUMOR in your daily life...laugh and enjoy having the opportunity to grow and climb and be successful.
