<Hi Laurie: Can you let your subscribers know that I'm offering a one-day grammar
review workshop via NSCCollege (in Beverly, MA) on Saturday, Sept. 15. Also, if
any of them have any grammar questions, I'd be happy to answer them. Do give
out my e-mail address, O.K.? It's gratifying to know others "out there" are as concerned
with the shoddy grammar others use. Keep up the good fight, Laurie. Nice to meet you -
hope to meet you in person someday. Be well! >

3.  Weekly Article:  <<MOTIVATORS for RISK-TAKING>>

Last week's issue dealt with the barriers to women in taking risks.. here are some
ways to get motivated to take risks..for women as well as for men!
q       The BELIEF in the importance of taking risks to grow.  First we need the
awareness that taking responsible risks moves us towards achieving our
        potential...reaching fulfillment...finding happiness...creating the life we want.

q       ROLE MODELS: Others can inspire us to take risks through modeling
successful risk-taking.  Mentors can support and encourage us along the way.

q       SUPPORT SYSTEM: People in our life an encourage us to take responsible risks;
they can support us in our personal and professional growth.

q       DEADLINES: Setting deadlines can create pressure to risk by a certain time.

q       REWARDS: Selecting things to reward oneself for taking risks can be very
effective in getting unstuck and in motivating oneself.

q       ELIMINATE any SAFETY NET:  One way to ensure risking is to make sure
that once you risk there is no going back.  You MUST make the risk work
because you have committed yourself.  You make sure you cannot return to
        your comfort zone.

q       BOREDOM:   Feeling bored, stagnant, or too comfortable can motivate you
to risks. Sometimes maintaining the status quo of the comfort zone can take more
energy than actually moving forward to risk.

q       PAIN/DISCOMFORT: Feeling uncomfortable or in pain can motivate us to move
fast towards taking a risk in order to change.

q       ADVERSITY: Adverse conditions require that we find ways to deal with it.
Paul Stoltz, author of <Adversity Quotient>, maintains that it is through adversity
that we grow personally and professionally over time. Knowing this can motivate
us to deal with the adversity that comes with taking risks.

q       PEER PRESSURE: If others around you are taking risks you may feel pressured
and inspired to also take risks.

q       GENETICS: Maybe it's in our genes to take risks! Do you have the novelty-seeking gene?
Are you a Big T <thrill> personality? Are you a man?  If so, you are genetically pre-
        disposed to take risks.

q       GENDER: Men are more encouraged to take risks;  women tend to be overly protected
from risky actions.  The feminist movement has encouraged women to risk more...slowly
        women are risking....and growing!
        (see newsletter issue # 77)

q       CULTURAL:  Does your culture/society encourage you to take risks?  If you're American,
it's probably true: our country was founded by risk-takers seeking to create a better life.

q       COACHING:  As more and more people hire coaches they get the support and
encouragement to take more risks to create the life they want.

q       POSITIVE ADDICTION:  The more one risks the more risking feels good and thus
we want to continue to feel the positive feelings/adrenalin rush of risking.
William Glaser, author of <Positive Addiction>, maintains that we can create
        positive addictions through risking.

q       INTUITION/GUT FEELING: Sometimes one feels an inner knowing that it is now
time to take that risk.  Learn to trust your intuition!

q       RISK MUSCLE: Knowing that taking risks builds your risk muscle can  motivate
you to risk to strengthen it in order to be prepared for future risks.

q       PAST POSITIVE RISKING EXPERIENCES give us the foundation to trust that risking
will lead to more positive experiences and success..so we want to keep risking!
Exercise: Make a list of all your past risking experiences: what did you learn? what
do you wish you had done differently?  what will you do differently now?
