<The 3 STEP MODEL for TAKING RESPONSIBLE RISKS >

STEP I: PREPARATION: *Use the 3 R's of Risking*

*READINESS*

*Key Questions to ask yourself (and answer):
What are the possible/expected consequences of taking this risk?
What will be the Costs (emotional -physical-financial-relational)?
What will be the potential Gains??
What's the worst possible consequence? Could I handle that?
What is the best possible consequence? Could I handle that?

*Who are my support systems? Whom should I avoid (non-supportive people)?
How will this risk affect the people in my life?
What are my responsibilities? Do others have any responsibilities?

*Who are my role models? Mentors? What can I learn from them?

*Can I adopt a child's P.O.V (Point of View) to risking?

*What Skills do I need to learn?

*What Information/Education do I need?

*What's my Plan? What are my Action Steps?

*Timing: Is this the right time to take this risk? Will I regret it if I don't take this
risk now? How will I feel later not having taken this risk?

*Do I have the Reserves (of time, money, health, energy, etc.) I need to take this risk?

*What are my Blocks to risking? How can I reduce/eliminate these blocks?

*How can I Motivate myself to take this risk?

*What's my "gut" feeling/intuition about taking this risk?

*Do I have the Characteristics of a "smart" risk-taker?

*Can I create an Environment that will motivate/encourage/inspire/support me in risking?

*How can I build my Personal Foundation to support me in risking? How can I build my Self Esteem?
Can I practice Extreme Self Care to prepare myself?

*What can I learn from my Risk History? i.e. the risks have I taken over my lifetime.

*Can I build in a Safety Net for risking? do I want to build one or do I just want to commit to risk?

*REHEARSAL*

*In what ways can I practice my risk ahead of time?

*Can I take mini-steps to test out the risk...eg. send out "trial balloons" ?

*Can I Write out my "risk plan"

*Can I Discuss my risk plan with supportive friends/colleagues

*Can I Visualize successfully achieving the risk

*RELAXATION*

*Learn & Practice relaxation techniques: diaphragmatic breathing, meditation, etc.

*Practice breathing before and during risking!

STEP II. COMMITMENT

A. ACTION..Take that risk - Go for it! - Commit!

Until one is committed, there is hesitancy,
the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.
Concerning all acts of initiative and creation there is one elementary truth,
the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans:
that the moment one definitely commits oneself, the Providence moves too.
All sorts of things occur to help one that would not otherwise have occurred.
A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favor all manner of unforeseen incidents
and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed could have come his way.
Whatever you can do, or dream you can do,
Begin it!
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.
Begin it Now! Goethe

B. Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway!

III. COMPLETION (the most important step??)

A. Evaluate the "success" of your risk... what did you achieve?
what did you learn? what would you do differently next time?

B. What is the Next Step? or what Risk is next? (often one risk leads
to another one...) The risking process is like a cycle that is
constantly moving...ever-changing..
