2.  WEEKLY ARTICLE:  <<Top Ten Strategies for Developing Your Risk Muscle>>

Do you consider yourself a risk-taker?  Do you want to take more risks?  Do you believe that taking risks (Smart risks!) leads to personal growth? if so, follow the ten strategies below...

TOP TEN STRATEGIES for DEVELOPING your RISK MUSCLE

1.  Take your Risk History  identify your learnings, strengths, characteristics.
Continue to keep a Risk Journal - identify risks you continue to take

2.  Take a personal risking assessment identify what type of risk-taker you are.

3.  Establish a strong support network.

4.  Identify Role Models/Mentors to inspire and support you to risk.

5.  Develop your Reserves…of time, money, people, energy, skills…

6.  Reduce your Blocks to Risking.
        (see newsletter issues #16 & 39 @ www.ingearcoaching.com/newsletter.html)

7.  Identify…and establish… your Motivators to Risk
        (see newsletter issues #1, 15, 66 @ www.ingearcoaching.com/newsletter.html)

8.  Develop the Skills and Characteristics needed to Risk.
        (see newsletter issue # 18 @ www.ingearcoaching.com/newsletter.html)

9.  Identify and Use Resources to support your Risking: books, workbooks, articles, tapes,
      videos, workshops/trainings/teleclasses.

10.  Use the 8 R’s of Risking:
Readiness,Rehearsal,Relaxation, Reserves,Resources,Role Models,Reduce Blocks,Risk & Re-evaluate!

1) Readiness: Prepare for the risk you are going to take by using the 3-Step Risk-taking Model
(see my workbook on RISK TO GROW!)
        Ask yourself these key questions:
        *What information/skills/materials/money do you need?
*What characteristics do I need to develop?
*Who are your support systems?  Who will encourage/inspire you?
*Is this the right time to take this risk? How will I feel if I don't risk now?
*What are the pros/cons? expected outcome? worst possible consequence?
*What is my plan for risking? are my action steps?
*How can I motivate myself to risk? reward myself for risking?
*How can I create an environment that will support me in risking?
*What does my intuition tell me?  What is my "gut feeling?"
*Can I create a "safety net?"  or a backup plan, in case the risk "fails"

2) Rehearsal: Is there any way I can practice this risk ahead of time? (eg. if I am going
        to give a speech I can practice giving it...taping it...writing it...videotaping it)
I can visualize myself succeeded at risking.
I can write out...describe...journal..about my risk.
        I can verbalize...talk about..my risk.

3) Relaxation:  Learn and practice relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing (before and
during the risking!)....mediation, progressive relaxation, deep muscle relaxation, visualization.,
        anxiety reduction methods..

4) Reserves:  What reserves do I need to prepare and support me in risking? Can I build reserves of Time....Money...Supports...Information....Energy (Fitness/Health)....Skills?

5) Resources:  What resources do I need to prepare me to risk - Information? Materials? People?

6) Role Models:  Are there people I can look to who have risked successfully?  What can I learn
from them?  Can I ask them for their support? encouragement? helpful hints? key information?
        lessons learned?

7) Reduce Blocks:  What blocks will get in my way of risking?
eg. Fears, negative self talk, low self esteem, scripting/habit,
tolerations (see newsletter issue #39 @ www.ingearcoaching.com/newsletters.html), etc.
How can I reduce these blocks?
        (see newsletter issue #16 @ www.ingearcoaching.com/newsletters.html)

8) Risk & Re-evaluate:  Take that risk! Commit! Go for it!....and then re-evaluate what you
        gained/learned....and identify next steps.
