Reader Feedback:
<Just read your recent newsletter( #66 - on Finding Passion) It continues
to
be so good. I really needed to read the first 2
stories this week; they were very timely. I plan to
use the coral reef metaphor as a continuing guidepoint
for my own life. Thanks!>

Being able to make mistakes is fundamental to building
high self esteem; if you are trying to find your passion you must have
the courage to take risks; you can't take risks without making mistakes.
Risking involves moving out of our comfort zone into the unknown. Being
in the unknown means trying something new; when we try something new we
can't predict the outcome. Mistakes are part of everyone's life.
All learning comes from making mistakes: we try something and if it doesn't
work we then make corrections: mistakes are simply mis takes.
Automatic pilot in airplanes sets a course. When the plane is off-course
it simply corrects back on-course. Mistakes are like that for us: mistakes
tell us we are off-course so we can learn what is on-course. We need
to see mistakes are learning opportunities, not reasons to get discouraged
and give up. We need to see mistakes as stepping stones to success!
Yet, most of us fear making mistakes; it even seems we fear making
mistakes much more the older we get. We avoid taking risks because
of our fear of making mistakes; we can become frozen in action, paralyzed,
afraid to do or try anything. What we need is an attitude adjustment:
we need to see....
Why It's Great to Make Mistakes:
*You learn! The bigger the mistake, the more you learn.
You learn new skills, get new information, gain greater awareness, insights,
and understanding.
*You discover your resilience; you learn what you are capable of.
*You can grow by accepting responsibility for your mistakes..and not
blaming others.
*You build your risk muscle as you risk and grow through making mistakes.
*You no longer have to be perfect; you can relax and enjoy the learning
process.
*You have increased freedom: you are not stifled by the fear of making
mistakes.
*Your perspective changes: you see a mistake as simply a mis
- take that tells you when you are off-course so you can correct to on-course.
*You find out who your friends are - people who accept you, even respect
you, for your imperfect self who makes mistakes.
*You can redefine yourself - you can alter your self identity as someone
who learns and grows through making mistakes.
*You build your self esteem as you learn from your mistakes.
*You recognize, and accept, your limitations as you learn more about
yourself by making mistakes.
*You align yourself with many famous people who learned...and became
successful...through learning from mistakes. They didn't let making mistakes
stop them from their goals!
some <Famous Failures>...
-Woody Allen: flunked motion picture production at New York University
-The Beatles: turned down by Decca Recording Company in 1962 for having
a "bad sound."
-Buddy Holly: fired from Decca label in 1956 as "the biggest no-talent
every worked with."
-Elvis Presley: fired by Grand Ole Opry in 1954; told to "go back to
truck drivin'"
-Louis L'Amour: received 350 rejections before he made his first sale
-Thomas Edison: tried 2,000 experiments before he invented the light
bulb
-Marilyn Monroe: told by Blue Book Modeling Agency, in 1944, to give
up modeling.
-Abraham Lincoln: failed twice in business, defeated 7 times in politics,
before elected president in 1860.
-Walt Disney: fired by a newspaper editor for lack of ideas; he went
bankrupt several times
-Henry Ford: failed and went broke 5 times before he finally succeeded.
-Babe Ruth: famous for setting the home run record, also holds the
record for strikeouts.
-Robert Frost: rejected by the Atlantic Monthly for his poems because
they were "too vigorous."
-Sylvester Stallone: rejected 19 times for his screenplay; he decided
to produce "Rocky" himself!
*You too can become a role model for others and support them in making
mistakes to learn and grow.
So, make mistakes to learn and grow! make mistakes to build your risk
muscle; make mistakes to be free; make mistakes to build your self esteem;
make mistakes to succeed!

A Poem: Keep Going...
<When things go wrong, as they sometimes will;
When the road you're trudging seems all uphill;
When the funds are low and the debts are high;
And you want to smile, but you have to sigh;
When care is pressing you down a bit;
Rest, if you must, but don't you quit.
Life is queer with its twists and turns,
As every one of us sometimes learns.
And many a fellow turns about
when he might have won, had he stuck it out.
Don't give up though the pace seems slow;
You may succeed with another blow.
Often the goal is nearer than
it seems to a faint and faltering man;
Often the struggler has given up
when he might have captured the victor's cup;
and he learned too late when the night came down
how close he was to the golden crown.
Success is failure turned inside out,
the silver tint of the clouds of doubt.
And you never can tell how close you are;
it may be near when it seems afar.
So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit.
It's when things seem worst that you mustn't quit>.
