Topic: <More on BUILDING SELF ESTEEM>
Self Esteem = How I Esteem
my Self! Self Esteem is my reputation with myself!
"Self Esteem is the disposition to experience oneself as competent to
copy with the basic challenges of life...and to feel worthy of happiness.
Self esteem involves: *appreciating my own worth and importance;
*having the character to be accountable for myself;
*acting responsibly towards others."
Official definition of Self Esteem by the California Task Force to
Promote Self Esteem and Personal and Social Responsibility (1990)
Self esteem is the experience that we are appropriate to life and to
the requirements of life. It involves:
*confidence in our ability to think and cope with life's basic challenges;
*confidence in our right to be happy, feel worth, deserving, entitled to
assert our needs and wants and to enjoy the fruits of our efforts.
Definition Self Esteem by Nathaniel Branden from <The Six Pillars
of Self Esteem>
Self Esteem is knowing "IALAC" (I am Lovable and Capable); Sid Simon.
How is your self esteem?
Do you esteem your Self? How has your esteem developed over your
lifetime? How is it developing now?
Do you believe that you can affect your self esteem now and continue
to build it?
Our level of self-esteem affects everything we think, say, or
do:
*it affects how others see
and treat us;
*it affects the choices
we make;
*it affects our ability
to give and receive love:
*it increases our chances
for happiness, well-being, and effective functioning:
*it helps us cope with life's
disappointments/stressors
Therefore it seems essential that we focus daily on ways to strengthen
and build our self esteem.
A mature adult with high
self esteem has:
*an ability to love and
form close relationships;
*an ability to find and
sustain satisfying work;
*an ability to play and
enjoy life;
*an ability to accept responsibility;
*an ability to recognize
and respect the rights of others;
*an ability to empathize
with others;
*an ability to feel capable,
significant, worthy, lovable, successful.
"By self esteem we refer to the evaluation which the individual makes
and maintains with regard to himself; it expresses an attitude of approval
or disapproval." (Stanley Coopersmith)
Did you know that numerous studies have shown that two out of three
people have low self esteem? that only 35% of people feel confident. Why
is that? Do we settle for less? Do we not expect that we can
have a happier life?
On a scale of 1 to 100 what self esteem score would you give yourself?
What number would you like your score to be? What is the gap? Are you doing
what you need to do to raise your level of self esteem?
"our self-feeling in this world depends entirely on what we back ourselves
to be & do; it is determined by the ratio of our actualities to our
supposed potentialities..." (William James, 1890)
Many psychologists have developed
methods for helping us take action to build our confidence: Nathaniel Branden
created the Six Pillars of Self Esteem; Jack Canfield created the Ten Steps
to Success; Brian Tracy created the Six Keys to Success.
I have recently developed the Eight A's of Self Esteem (see newsletter
issue #22). All of us make it clear that there are specific actions
we can take to build our self esteem. Building our self esteem is
a conscious, purposeful process. We can, and must, take charge of
our life and create the happy life we want now..
Self esteem develops over
our lifetime; it is not a condition that was settled at age 3 or by age
6, as some psychologists claim. One's self esteem is never finally
settled; it is ever evolving as we grow and change throughout our life.
There are many ways to continue
to build your self esteem; we each have to find what works best for us.
Reading self-help books, listening to motivational tapes or motivational
speakers, attending workshops, courses or retreats, working with a coach
or a counselor, setting and achieving goals...are some of the many avenues
for growth.
This fall I am offering a
weekly group coaching teleclass to focus on <Building Your Self Esteem
through the Awesome 8-A System>
.Each session will focus on one of the 8 A's of Self Esteem Development*...a
unique, inspiring and practical process for positive change.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: - a retreat for building self esteem!
*CONFIDENCE CAMP: Women Getting Stronger from the Inside Out
Date: September 8-10, 2000
Description:
Today's women are smart, ambitious, well-educated and have tremendous
skills, talent and experience. Even so, there are times when our inner
voices undermine our confidence, testing our resolve. Deep inside, we know
we are competent, but self-doubt and fears can erode self-confidence and
sabotage even the most capable woman. In this workshop, women will explore
the inner obstacles that are getting in the way of living their dreams.
The goal is to move beyond awareness to change mind sets and re-program
old patterns.
To accomplish this, we're going back to camp to remember how strong
and capable we are!We are going to rediscover that self-assured kid we
were long ago and go back out into the world reconnected to our authentic
and confident self. Our activities will include a blend of reflective inner
exercises and experiential outdoor activities to help create an environment
where women will be gently challenged to look at self-defeating behaviors
and beliefs and move beyond them. We honor that each participant decides
their level of participation, yet we will encourage you to exceed your
perceived limits.
Location: Fox Hall, Lake Willoughby, Vermont, just a few hours from
Boston. A lovely old inn and beautiful barn with fieldstone fireplace for
workshops.
Cost: The cost of this pilot program is $299 and includes everything:
accomodations at Fox Hall, food, the progam materials and other incidental
costs. Limited to 15 participants.
Program goals:
- Have a better understanding of our confidence level and its impact
on our lives
- Develop skills and have experiences that strengthen our level of
confidence
- Leave with a shift in beliefs, attitudes and behaviors about confidence
and go out into the world using these new tools
- Have fun, meet interesting women, grow, and be a kid for a couple
of days
Facilitators:
Lois Sekerak Hogan and Jean Corson Wolff. As original members of the
"Feral Femmes," an informal group of women who get together to hike, howl
and laugh, Lois and Jean have long believed that women thrive in an environment
of cameraderie and fun. Their vision for Confidence Camp is to create innovative
learning opportunities that help women discover their innate leadership
and voice and unleash the power of their fully authentic selves.
