Topic: <<DELICIOUS DAILY HABITS for De-STRESSING>>
The theme this month has been on ways to simplify your life by
reducing tolerations, organizing and prioritizing, delegating, and by eliminating
unnecessary tasks...SUBTRACTING...thus creating a space to ADD into your
life that which brings you joy and satisfaction. This week's topic
focuses on creating Delicious Daily Habits that will help you create the
life you want.
What's a habit? It is something you do over time that it
becomes part of you. Supposedly up to 90% of our normal behavior is based
on habits. How do we develop our habits? Are you happy with your
habits? Many of our habits don't serve us....they bring negative
consequences to our life (eg. smoking, eating fast food, watching t.v....)
yet we continue doing them. The results of our bad habits often don't
show up until much later in life; by then they can be very difficult to
break!
Taking stock of our habits...good and bad...is a good exercise....which
habits serve you? which have negative consequences? Become
aware of your bad habits..and eliminate them! Identify the good habits
you want to have ...and start them! If you don't like your habits,
remember: <If you do what you've always done, you will get what you've
always got!> Do something different...be a success:
<successful people have positive daily habits>
They say it takes 3-4 weeks (or about 21 days) to change a habit.
Habits create neuro-pathways in the brain that are like grooves (or ruts!)
that are hard to get out of....we need about 4 weeks to create a new groove!
What positive daily habits do you want to create....to continue doing?
Below is a list
of some Delicious Daily Habits I am incorporating into my life....What
are yours? I welcome more suggestions of your recommended positive habits!
1. RELAXATION:
*I make sure I get enough sleep each day...I know that more than
anything else, if I have not had enough sleep I will not be functioning
up to my potential during the day. Some studies prove that we need
9 hours per night!
*I also work on breathing diaphragmatically (taking deep breaths)
throughout the day rather than doing shallow breathing. Thoracic
breathing (from the chest) has been shown to create stress in the
body..so, when I'm driving in the car..or standing in line...or giving
a presentation..or talking to a client...I remind myself to breathe deeply
so that I can focus more intently on what I am doing..
*I am developing the habit of doing yoga or stretching each day...
*Spending time outdoors..in nature...is a great form of relaxation
for me.. especially being by the ocean..or high on top of a mountain..I
can find a great deal of peace of mind and spirit being in nature....and
in the sun.
*Listening to music is a wonderful form of relaxation.
2. EATING WELL:
*I am developing the habit of eating low-fat foods....and eliminating
the habit of eating fast foods
*I have recently developed the habit of taking the right vitamins
each day
*I am eating a well-balanced diet...and not over-eating.
3. EXERCISE:
*I exercise aerobically each day...jogging or hiking or walking,
swimming, biking, roller blading, tennis....(skiing in the winter).
*I want to add the habit of weight lifting (resistance training)
4. WRITING:
*Since I was 11 years old, I have kept a diary or a journal -
a place where I record my thoughts and feelings...as well as memories of
places I have traveled, things I have accomplished.
*I have recently created the habit of writing a weekly newsletter..which
I am proud of!
*I am starting to create the habit of writing my book on <The
A+ Actions for Building Self Esteem>
5. CONNECTION:
*Each day I connect with the people I love...my sister, my sons,
granddaughters, mother, friends, and colleagues, clients and students.
I make a point to talk to them on the phone or to see them in person.
*I have been developing a habit of greater connection to people
through the internet and through teleclasses.
*I maintain and develop my professional connections through attending
networking events and meetings.
*I seek out positive people to be around..I look for mentors..successful
people to connect with whenever I can.
7. LIFE LONG LEARNING:
*Each day I read a book and/or magazine that furthers my learning
.
*I listen to motivational tapes when I drive in my car.
*I make a point of attending cultural events...plays, concerts,
lectures, museums, movies...as often as possible
*I continue to learn new skills (eg. computer, powerpoint, windsurfing,
dancing..)
*I challenge myself all the time...to take risks to grow!
8. SELF-NURTURING:
*I take hot baths, get massages/facials regularly
*I buy myself flowers...which I can look at each day.
*I treat myself to nice restaurants...a good glass of wine or
a delicious dessert.
*I buy myself things as rewards for hard work.
*Coaching - I have a coach...I coach myself...and I coach others
for self-nurturing!
9. HUMOR/LAUGHTER:
*I make sure I laugh a lot each day!
*I listen to humorous tapes or see funny movies or read funny
stories/jokes.
10. FUN:
*I play every day!....I go dancing (or I dance around the house
to music) or I play games with friends or I play with my
granddaughters....I find time to be playful and have fun ! I
love this habit!
